Writing/NewsGathering

During my time in the world of journalism and marketing, I have learned that writing is a vital skill that helps elevate each project I work on. Below are examples of broadcast scripts I have written, as well as journalism and marketing writing materials, from the past year.

BRAINSTORMING

DEVELOPING THE STORY

WRITING THE SCRIPT

When brainstorming for a script or broadcast, I think about what is happening within my school or community. I use social media to find interesting things that are going on around the Batesville and Oxford area.

After I had looked through all the news for the week, it was time to pick what would be most interesting to create a story. Once the story is picked, I reach out to the organization or business and then it is time to write out questions for the interview. I ask questions that would give background information on the topic and ask questions that would keep our viewers engaged.

With every story, every script is different. I start my crafting a voice-over message, that sets the tone and introduces the story to the audience. Then, I list out my questions and paraphrase my responses in the script. This serves as a guide during the editing process, where I determine the order of my clips. During my time at South Panola, our broadcast scripts involved creatively rephrasing information from our district Facebook page, but it was at NewsWatch Ole Miss where I learned how to write a script for a professional news station. The inclusion of each detail is necessary, ensuring that when it comes to broadcasting, every word flows seamlessly.
